As Project Leader, Dr. Facchini is responsible for overseeing the Project and co-ordinating the project activities in conjunction with the Project co-leader. Dr. Peter Facchini's research interests are the biosynthesis of high value meabolites in the Opium Poppy and related species. The opium poppy has the unique ability to synthesize morphine, codeine and a variety of other benzylisoquinoline alkaloids of pharmaceutical importance. His research approaches the study of alkaloid biosynthesis from a broad perspective that includes biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, genomics, genetic transformation and metabolic engineering. Dr. Facchini will work on the benzylisoquinoline mechanism on the Project. Dr. Facchini holds the position of Professor, Canada Research Chair in Plant Biotechnology in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. |
